Musical Improv

I work in musical improvisation as an extension of ensemble-based storytelling, where music, rhythm, and narrative are generated in real time.

I trained in musical improv at The Magnet Theater, and perform regularly with my house team Go Go Go!, developing long-form, music-driven ensemble work.

I also perform with my independent team The Backyard Asians, with upcoming performances at the 2026 Asian Comedy Festival.

I have completed the Musical Coaching program at The Magnet Theater, and can accompany and facilitate simple musical improv structures on piano.

My practice extends internationally through Global Improvisation Initiative, where I develop and lead musical improvisation workshops, working with performers across cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Through musical improv, I am particularly interested in how voice, language, and musicality intersect: how meaning can emerge through sound, rhythm, and collective composition beyond scripted structure.

Process / Approach

My work focuses on:

  • Musical listening and group awareness

  • Song structure

  • Rhythm, phrasing, and pattern recognition

  • Voice, breath, and vocal spontaneity
